Reduce Overheating In Your Docklines and Rodes

But what percentage of a rope's breaking durability is considered an "extreme" weight? And exactly how does the regularity of the load cycling impact heat build-up? And most importantly, how can we prevent this specific intra-fiber heat buildup from happening?

In the end, our testers discovered that although intra-fiber friction is actually a genuine risk, the more problematic threat is our apparent adversary-- exterior friction caused by rubbing on chocks, anchor rollers, docks, fairleads etc. And the risk of interior friction on smaller sized diameter ropes is much less likely than it is on bigger diameter ropes.

Ropes greater than one-inch in diameter are subject to interior heating if packed past their safe working limit or loaded at high frequency. Ground anchor and sea anchor rodes are cycled at low frequency; though the core will see some increase in temperature level, it will definitely not progress to the point of compromising the rope unless the rope is packed past the 10:1 safe working limitation. If the anchor rode is sized right, it will never be over-strained or overheated.

Even though external friction is the most likely reason for failing in drogue or sea anchor lines, the loads enforced on a sea anchor rode can produce sufficient internal heat to trigger malfunction.

Dock lines are more serious issue. If the boat is subjected to short-period chop from the side, the regularity can be high and the pressure can exceed the 10:1 safe functioning limitation. Core temperature levels above the boiling point are feasible in dry conditions, and even with spray to cool the rope there certainly might be significant deterioration. - Anti-chafe equipment type. Stay clear of waterproof materials. Select materials that are inherently slippery, such as nylon webbing.

- Anti-chafe gear positioning. Stay clear of sharp turns because these increase friction. Often poor cleat positioning can easily lead to extreme bends at a hawse hole or chock. Our evaluation of deck cleats on typical production boatsrevealed a variety of major problems.

- Reduce the run. Reducing the distance in between the anchor point and the friction point will decrease the back-and-forth movement that will escalate friction. Polyester or Dyneema pendants through the chock will combat friction here.

- Prevent slack lines and bouncing. In a recent article on storm preparation we discussed motion control. A boat that is bouncing on its lines escalates chafe, frictional heating, and forces.

- Choose the appropriate size. When truly serious weather is actually expected, seafarers like to double up lines and set up oversize lines, but the average watercraft does not possess cleats big enough to accommodate the required dock line size. We have taken to setting up strong Dyneema loops over the cleats in order to enable attaching multiple large lines to a standard cleat.

Sometimes in the rush of progression we lose sight of the simple things that keep wakeboarding fun. We teamed up with our friends at Slingshot and put together a list of ten ways to keep your wakeboarding simple and exciting behind the boat.

1 - Powerslides

Powerslides are one of the most exhilarating ways to look and feel cool on the lake. And the bigger the spray the better. Not much beats cutting out onto a glassy stretch of water and laying an edge - it’s a timeless move that’s often overlooked. Add in some lily pads to make an even bigger impression.

2 - New Grabs

Don’t feel like working on the whirlybird again after last month's attempt / TKO? We don’t either... Luckily there’s an endless amount of grab variations and ways to give simple tricks like straight airs, 180’s, or 360’s a whole new look and feel. Front hand tail grabs, back hand nose grabs, methods, reverse methods and more. 

3 - Tail Press

Like the powerslide, this often overlooked surface maneuver can be a ton of fun (and it’s one of the easiest to do) with a flexier board like the Nomad or Solo. Pull the fins off and sink back into the tail of the board while out in the flats to feel the flex working its magic beneath your feet. It’s like cruising a powder run in the snow - perfect for glassy days. 

4 - Use a Wrap Handle

Wrapped tricks can bring a whole new element of fun to your riding, and you don’t have to do crazy, technical tricks to use one. Eliminating the need to pass the handle smooths out your spins, gives you more opportunities to grab, and make for epic photos - just ask Dylan Miller, who’s been milking his wrapped 360 for years!

5 - Try a Long(er) Board

The term “long board” can mean different things to different people, but for this purpose we’re talking about adding 10 cm to your usual board length (or more) for a whole new feel on the water. You can slow your pace for a bit, spend more time appreciating the hang time rather than rushing through the air, and the landings are a breeze.

A war veteran who lost both his legs and a hand and needed ten operations on his face after a roadside bombing in Afghanistan is now sailing around the world all by himself. 

Craig Wood, 27, was only 18 when he was serving in Afghanistan and was hit by the bomb blast on his first patrol - leaving him in a coma for 14 days. 

Doctors said he only had a 50/50 chance of surviving the bombing but Craig eventually woke up - only to find his legs and left hand had been amputated.

Craig's injuries left him needing 27 pints of blood to survive and he also had ten operations on his face. As he lay in a rehab centre in Surrey, he met the Duchess of Cornwall and promised her that he would walk again.

Craig took eight months to learn how to use prosthetic legs and he had to have four-and-a-half years of rehab.

He said: ' I can't climb the mast on my own, or hold nuts and screw them, but when I haven't got crew on board to help with the two-handed jobs I just find someone on ­another boat to jump aboard and help me out. I'm quite comfortable and content with my life. It's not a ­struggle, because I've made it so it's not a struggle. I'm happy on the boat.

'I want to go to Brazil, Argentina and all over the Americas, the Caribbean and the west coast of the Americas and the Pacific. 

Craig is planning on releasing a book next year, called Less than 10 Degrees, on his recovery from the bomb blast and his adventures at sea.
